Society respond to The New Statesman article

Dear Sir,
As the UK’s largest professional association and regulator of homeopaths, The Society of Homeopaths was interested to read Simon Singh’s latest inaccurate diatribe about homeopathy (New Statesman, 17 April 2008). In his keenness to promote his new book, he elects to ignore a number of important facts concerning homeopathy.
The first is that homeopathy does work. The most up to date analysis of all of the research shows that there are now 134 peer-reviewed controlled trials of homeopathy, 44 per cent of which are positive, with only eight trials negative, and the rest are inconclusive.
The second is that people want it. In fact, a Mintel report last year stated that 49 per cent of British women and 28 per cent of men have used complementary medication and would use it again. A further 27 per cent of adults would consider using it in the future. The report also stated that the sale of homeopathic remedies had increased by 24 per cent over five years.
There is no doubt that, in the interests of the public, homeopaths need greater regulation. That is precisely why The Society has taken the lead to establish the first independent single register and regulatory body for homeopaths.
Singh claims that “arrogance and ignorance in healthcare are…unforgivable sins”. Whilst he is busy hoisting himself with his own petard, our registered members remain focused on delivering effective homeopathic healthcare of the highest standard to the many thousands of people who genuinely want it.
